My name is Adam Mooney, I'm a photographer from Waldport Oregon. Photography for me has never been about "getting the shot" or trying to get noticed. In fact, I never even thought to pick up a camera until I was 19 years old. What was the point of capturing something when I could be experiencing it? It wasn't until I enlisted into the Army that I thought to buy a camera. JUNE 10TH 2014 - MARCH 23RD 2015 Being from a small town in Oregon meant a couple things. Waldport had, and still has, a population of around two thousand people. It's a place where you can go to the local grocery store on a Sunday afternoon and run into more than a few good friends; this is something the community cherished. Everyone knew everybody. Being from a town like this wasn't a bad thing, but we were sheltered. When I graduated high school I didn't know where to go or what to do with my life. I started college because that was the only answer anyone would give me. After about two terms, I decided that, at that point and time, college wasn't for me. I joined the Army. JULY 10TH 2015 - AUGUST 17TH 2015 Fast forward a few months – I had just gotten out of a sixteen-week basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia. Prior to being in the military I had never been on a plane, or outside of the Pacific Northwest for that matter. I found myself on the other side of the United States and away from home for the first time. I was overwhelmed by all of the changes and unfamiliar faces that surrounded me. Getting out of basic training meant that I had some money saved up (because you can't do anything for sixteen weeks) and for some reason while I was training all I kept thinking about was buying a camera. It was then that I first got the hunger for capturing memories. My military orders would take me to Fort Richardson, Alaska. I knew I was going to need a camera for that. The first opportunity I got, I went to Best Buy and bought a little Canon Power Shot Sx60 for $500. It was incredible. I didn't know a single thing about photography or even that I would grow to love it. But in that moment, I found myself and the answer to what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. MARCH 17th 2017 - PRESENT DAY After almost two years in Alaska, I went from being a small-town kid who had never left home, to traveling more than most people I know. I met some great photographers and the love of my life. I'm currently in Virginia, but by the time you're reading this I'll be in Georgia with less than a year left in my enlistment. I found that my inspiration is capturing memories that will last forever. Portraiture seems to be what I find myself shooting the most. I can't wait to see where this passion takes me next.
